To find out whether your phone is unlocked, insert a SIM card from a different network into your phone. If it operates normally, it is unlocked.
If not, you can ask your operator for an 'unlock code' which it is obliged to give you, though conditions and charges may apply.
Alternatively you can unlock it yourself by taking your phone to an independent phone shop or by trying one of the independent unlocking websites.

Yes, your maxSIM™ number works just like any other UK phone number. Your friends and family dial a UK number and people outside the UK phone it as an international number, prefixed by +44 as the country code.

maxSIM™ works in over 115 countries worldwide - to the majority of popular travel and business destinations.

In a word - no. maxSIM™ charges you for the calls you make, and at considerably lower rates than other companies charge for international calls. There are no service fees or added charges of any sort.
You do, however, need to bare in mind that your maxSIM™ card will expire 9 months from the last time you use it. So, if you are not planning to travel abroad for a while, make a quick call anyway after a few months to make sure the expiry does not take effect (this will reactivate your card for another 9 months).

Is your phone unlocked? Check here. If your phone is unlocked it may be incompatible with maxSIM™. Most phones bought in the last 4 years work with maxSIM™.
You can check the list of compatible phones here. Enter the following code *125*9*# and you will get a message telling you which country you are in. If you don't your phone is incompatible with our SIM and you need to buy a phone that is compatible.

This is a specialised category where the automated outgoing call facilities are not available but, instead, there is an application that appears on the phone menu as “SIM Services”.
When activated SIM Services lets you dial a manual number or any phone number that is stored on the SIM itself (not from your mobile phone's memory) by using a directory look-up function. Please refer to your mobile phone user guide for more information.

Essentially these phones have no automated integration but any number can be dialled using the manual command string (which can also be stored in your mobile phone directory using this format). Numbers should be dialled using the following format: *125*1*{telephone number}#
As with all telephone numbers in the maxSIM™ network, the telephone number in this string must be inputted using the following format: First the country code, followed by the national area code, then followed by the required telephone number.
You do not need to use the international access codes (such as 00 or 011 or the + sign) and, conversely, you cannot dial a number without the country code at the front. To give an example, the number for the maxSIMª head office would be, even from the UK, simply: 442083272300.
All short codes, such as 121 for Voicemail, work within this dialling format and do not require any additional country codes etc - you dial them exactly as listed. Please note that anyone calling you on your maxSIM™ number would need to call you as they would call any UK number, adding 44 at the beginning and dropping the first zero. This means that the maxSIM™ prefix of 07624 would become 447624. Calls from within the UK would simply need to call 07624.
